Affiliate Marketing 101: You Must Focus For Affiliate Marketing Success

Affiliate marketing will be the first experience many people have with marketing online, and for most it will also be their first self-owned business. In fact, the lure of self-employment and all the potential lifestyle benefits is exactly what leads many people into the affiliate marketing industry in the first place.

But self-employment, in affiliate marketing or most other business endeavors, is a double-edged sword. For most people it’s the first time they had to self-motivate. Until now, they’ve always worked for an employer and had a boss keeping tabs on them and their performance. Unfortunately for most in our society that’s led to becoming experts at getting just enough accomplished to keep from being fired.

But that level of output won’t create a successful affiliate marketing business for you – not even close. Nor will the common around-the-water-cooler mentality of many workplaces, where employees spend as much time talking about anything under the sun EXCEPT the job at hand.

To be successful in affiliate marketing requires a new skill for most people – the ability to focus on the job at hand, keep your activities focused on your goals, and focus your affiliate marketing business along proven successful paradigms.

As you start your affiliate marketing operations, try to be professional right from the start. Set aside an area specific to your affiliate marketing work and clear it of any distractions. Sitting on the couch with one eye on the TV and one on your laptop isn’t going to cut it. Neither is sitting at the kitchen table while your children are beside you doing their homework. Proper focus requires that you set aside both a regular time and a regular place, both free of distractions if you truly want to succeed in affiliate marketing.

Your new ability to focus must extend to the online world too. There are more potential distractions online today than mankind could have dreamed up just 20 or 30 years ago. You’ll be bombarded with e-mails, visiting various blogs, business networking at the Web 2.0 sites, doing keyword and content research – all of which will give you ample opportunities to be distracted from your affiliate marketing efforts. You can give in to them – or you can be successful as an affiliate.

In the end, it’s your self-discipline, your focus, that will be one of the largest factors in your success or failure as an affiliate marketer. Take control of your time, your environment and your actions and really focus on building a successful affiliate marketing business – you’ll love all the trappings that success can bring!

Affiliate Marketing 101: Too Many Voices In Your Head To Succeed In Affiliate Marketing?

Affiliate marketing takes a clear mind, a clear agenda and a clear focus on the tasks at hand. So if you’re not making it as an affiliate marketer, it may just be that you have too many voices in your head. This doesn’t refer to schizophrenic tendencies, nor even to your conscience or ‘that little voice’ one often hears referred to.

For the most part, the voices in your head that lead to failure in affiliate marketing can be organized into three groups – the naysayers who don’t believe anyone can make money online, concerned friends and family members who know nothing of affiliate marketing but must offer their advice anyway, and the other affiliates and marketing mentors you’ve chosen to follow. Let’s take a look at all three groups with an eye to seeing how they’re leading you away from affiliate marketing success.

The first group, the naysayers, know little or nothing about affiliate marketing, though they’ll probably claim to be experts on the subject. They’ll tell you how they, or someone they know, did everything right for the longest time and made nothing, thus leaving them knowing that online marketing is all a sham. Attend any live internet marketing event and that viewpoint will quickly be dashed for you – in fact you’ll be amazed by how many successful affiliates there are online. What this group is really saying is that they, or their friends, weren’t capable of succeeding online. Avoid these people like the plague – they’re a drain on your energy and mindset.

The second group, your family and friends, probably DO have your best interests at heart. But unless they have a good understanding of online business, their decisions and advice will be based on their own experiences offline, which won’t be relevant just as often as it will be. You can’t avoid your loved ones – and shouldn’t – but you need to either ask them not to advise you on affiliate marketing or learn to let in ‘go in one ear and out the other’ as the popular saying goes.

The toughest collection of voices to deal with are the other affiliates and affiliate marketing mentors you’ve chosen to follow. Assuming you’ve chosen well, each is living proof that you can succeed at affiliate marketing, but each will be giving you different advice, often advice that contradicts what others are saying. Is someone right and someone wrong? Not necessarily…

The problem is there are many roads to the top, paths that you can follow to become a successful affiliate marketer. But you have to choose one path and walk it til you succeed – you can’t expect to take a bit of one system, a trifle of another and bits of a third and make it work for you. While you might get lucky that way, it’s far more prudent to follow a proven path til you reach a certain level before trying to modify it extensively. Wait til your own expertise is up to the task or you could be sabotaging your affiliate efforts without knowing it.

The solution here is to follow the advice on ONE mentor or advisor, the one that seems to you to be the closest in style and training methods to your own style and learning methods. Some people learn best by being shown, others by doing it themselves. Some people are Type A personalities and tend to be gung-ho in business, others prefer a more laid back style. Look for an affiliate marketing mentor that matches your style and follow their advice til you reach success in affiliate marketing. Then and only then can you let the rest of the voices have their say – because by then you’ll be an expert and in a position to judge for yourself who can and can’t help you increase your success online!

Affiliate Marketing 101: Take The Shotgun Approach To Affiliate Marketing Success

Professional affiliate marketing can be accomplished in many different ways, but the safest way to start affiliate marketing is to take a shotgun approach to your online activities as an affiliate.

Whereas a rifle fires a single shot with great speed and power, a shotgun uses less force but spreads out a pattern of shot that expands further the greater the distance. And that’s exactly the same pattern your marketing strategies should embrace online for maximum effect.

Rather than count just on your pay-per-click campaigns, your e-zine or your blog, spread your efforts (and the risks) over a much wider mix of affiliate promotion resources. Yes, you need to have your main focus on building your targeted opt-in list, but use every tool at your disposal to build it, especially the free tools that have been shown to work well in affiliate marketing.

These free tools include your affiliate blogging, social networking sites like MySpace, FaceBook and the like, micro-blogging sites like Twitter and web 2.0 sites like MyBlogLog, Technorati, Squidoo, HubPages, Google knol, etc. Yahoo Buzz and Google Buzz are also both powerful affiliate marketing resources when used properly, as is any site where you’re able to contact those people who have chosen to follow you.

The affiliate marketing shotgun approach has numerous advantages over other systems, like:

- Casting a wider net – the combined reach of the resources above is FAR greater than any single approach could be;

- Business Networking – you’ll make a lot more contacts both in your niche and in the affiliate marketing world by covering all of the bases;

- Spreading the risk – if all your efforts are concentrated in one area and for some reason that area doesn’t respond to an offer, you’ve made little or nothing. Since each of the resources above has a somewhat-unique community, you stand a better chance of one or more finding your affiliate offer appealing;

- Multiple signposts – Think of each link back to your blogs, squeeze pages or affiliate offers as a signpost, guiding people to the spot you’d like them to arrive at via your link. The greater the number of these signposts you have out there in a larger number of areas, the greater the chance new people will stumble across them in future. A TV or Radio ad is gone as soon as it’s over, a newspaper ad is around for a day or a week, a magazine ad is around for a month or a quarter – but your resources on the Internet can be there for years and years, with a growing potential audience each day;

- Powerful backlinks – each of the sites and resources mentioned are spidered, in whole or in part, by the major search engines. Since each backlink they find can help your search engine rankings, over time your accumulated mass of materials will help your blogs and squeeze pages rank better, thus increasing your traffic once again and hopefully your affiliate marketing commissions along with it!

To own and operate your own affiliate marketing business you should be thinking long-term, building your base of operations as you go along. Take the shotgun approach to affiliate marketing for your best shot at affiliate success!
